Kodandarama Temple

Kodandarama Temple, HampiHampi is an ordinary town but its heritage is extraordinary which clearly reflects in its ancient temples. It was founded in the 14th century by two local princes, Hukka and Bukka. The rulers of the Vijayanagara Empire made excellent contributions to the architectural beauty of the town. Kodandarama temple was one of the finest architectural jewel made by them. It clearly shows their passion of art and architecture.

Situated on the bank of Tungabhadra river, the Kodandarama temple is the place where lord Rama crowned Sugriva after defeating Vali. The word Kodandarama means 'crowned Rama'. The temple is dedicated to lord Rama. The sanctum sanctorum of the temples houses huge statues of Lord Rama, goddess Sita and Laxamana. The idols were initially carved on a huge rock and later the sanctum was built. During heavy rainfall, the water from the river reaches up to the courtyard of the temple. The temple offers a picturesque view of the river.

There is a bathingghat near the temple where thousands of devotees come every year to take bath. Notable attractions near the temple are the ancient pavilions. They are the resting places for the devotees. A walk along the riverbank is truly rejuvenating.
