Nehru Trophy Boat Race, Alleppey KeralaKnown as the “Venice of the East”, Alleppey is a district in Kerala. Famous for its backwater holidays, the district also boasts of a network of canals and lagoons. It was founded by Raja Kesavadasan, the Dewan of Travancore (king) in the year 1762. During that period it also grew into a major trade centre of South India. The merchants of Alleppey would import there goods to Europe, America and some other countries. It is still a major trade centre dealing in coir products, copra(dried coconut meat), coconut oil , Ayurvedic products and marine products. Sprawling over an area of around 1414 sq km, Alleppey is also famous for its paddy farming. The languages spoken by the people here are Malayalam and English. The people here follow simple life style.


Attractions In Alleppey:

Houseboats: The durable and beautiful houseboats of Alleppey are very famous. Many people are involved in their construction. A stay in the houseboat is really a wonderful experience.


Backwaters: Boat cruise on the backwaters is like a page from a fairytale book. The ambiance serves beauty and tranquillity in abundance. Boat cruise from Alleppey to Kollam(8 hour journey) entails a visit to a temple, Kathakali dance performance and stops for lunch and tea.


Nehru Trophy Boat Race: This boat race event is organised in the month of August every year at Punnamada lake.


If you wish you can even go for watching coir manufacturing process.


Cuisine:

Typical Kerala style of South Indian cuisine is prominent here. “Toddy” is its famous drink(made of coconut) which you must try at least once. Its very refreshing. Sea food is also available.


Climate:

Its great location makes its climate pleasant throughout the year. But the months of July-August are marked by heavy rain.

Air: Cochin International Airport is the nearest airport.
Rail: Alleppey railway station in Alleppey.
Road: It is connected by road to all the main cities of South India.


Shopping:

The markets of Alleppey are full of coir products, coconut oil and cardamom. Carpets and mats are the most famous. The Mullakkal place in the town boasts of gold and silver jewellery.
