Cochin


Santa Cruz Church, Cochin KeralaHolding sheer commercial and industrial importance, Cochin is an important city of Kerala. It is one of the seaports of India. This second largest city in Kerala is an important spice trade centre since the 14th century. Greeks, Romans, Jews, Arabs and ChineseĀ  were the people the traders of Cochin used to deal with during the ancient times. The city has a llot of places to lure tourists. Now it has been renamed as Kochi.


Some of the attractions are:


Dutch Palace: It is beautiful palace built by the Dutch in the 17th century. Reflecting the great Indian mythological themes, the murals in the palace deserve mention. The ceilings are no less decorated. You will be astonished to see the beautiful floor of the palace. It looks like a marble floor but in reality it is made from the mixture of burned coconut shells, lime, charcoal, plant juices and egg white.


Jewish Synagogue: Constructed in the 16th century, the Jewish Synagogue is an excellent piece of architecture. Most praiseworthy is its tile work. Hand painted tiles were used which were imported from China. Wood carvings, rare artefacts and gold and silver crowns are the other attractions found here.


St. Francis Church: Built in an attractive European style of architecture, the St. Francis Church boasts of lush green gardens. The interior is decorated beautifully with amazing paintings. It is dedicated to a Portugal saint Santo Antanio.


Chinese Fishing Nets: Made from teak wood and bamboo poles, the huge Chinese fishing nets look quite beautiful.

Air: The Cochin Airport connects the city with all the major cities of India.
Rail: Cochin is well connected with other important cities of India by rail.
Road: A good network of road make Cochin accessible from all the major cities of the country.
