Vivekanand Memorial

The Landmark of Kanyakumari, the mesmerizing Vivekananda Memorial is a monument steeped in spirituality and peace. Amazingly built on the sea shore, the monument is dedicated to the celebrated life Philosopher, Swami Vivekananda. It was constructed in the year 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee. In the month of December in 1892, Swami Vivekananda came to this rock for meditation. It is believed that he attained enlightenment on this rock and then he embarked on a journey to spread his spiritual teachings in the world. The rock is also known as 'Sripada Parai'.

From time immemorial the rock is held in high esteem by the people. It is considered very sacred because once it had been touched by the feet of the goddess Devi Kumari. On the rock, you must also see the human-foot like projection belonging to the goddess Devi Kumari. It is said that she performed Tapas(austerity) on this rock. This monument offers heavenly view – the merger of Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.
