The aroma and pleasant ambiance of the spice and tea plantations of Periyar entice tourists to give it a shot. The project named ' Spice Tourism Circuit' provides tourists a great opportunity to visit the numerous spice plantations in Kerala. The implementation of this project was a joint initiative of the Union Ministry of Tourism and the United Nations Development Programme. Not only this, according to the recent plans spice tours will also be organized for the tourists. A spice museum, spice food court and workshop for artists are likely. The spices grown here are cinnamon, cardamom, clove, black pepper, ginger, turmeric, vanilla and nutmeg.
Walk through the tea carpeted hills of Periyar and enjoy watching the women plucking the leaves of one of the most widely consumed beverage in the world. The leaves are plucked in a special manner – 'two-leaf-and-a-bud'. You can even spend a day or two in the beautiful cottages in the nearby areas of the plantations. In the morning wake up to the amazing aroma of tea prepared from one of the finest tea leaves in the world.
