It was the place from where Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, fought against the British rule. Unfortunate his own people betrayed him and finally he lost the battle. It was also a site where rockets and missiles were made under the supervision of the Tipu Sultan. The brave king fought with his sword with all his might but died a tragic death. He sacrificed his life for the Independence of India.

The Palace houses a beautiful temple, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. It is dedicated to lord Vishnu. It is the largest temple in Karnataka built in Hoysala and Vijayanagara styles of architecture. Vijayanagara rulers laid the foundation of the temple in the 19th century. It is said that during the battle, Tipu Sultan and his father Haider Ali protected the temple showing their utmost devotion for the lord. Other shrines inside the temple are dedicated to Lord Krishna, Gowtama Muni and River Kaveri. Twenty four different forms of Lord Vishnu can be seen on the pillars of the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple.
