Sivagiri Mutt
Founded by Sree Narayana Guru, Sivagiri Mutt is a prime attraction of Varkala. It also houses the final resting place (Samadhi) of the Guru. Established on a hill top in 1904, the Mutt is the headquarter of a social organisation(SNDP). The organisation was founded by the Guru himself. The aim of establishment of the organisation was to propagate the ideas of the Guru. Different celebrations in the mutt include Guru Deva Jayanti, birthday of the Guru and the Samadhi day of Sree Narayana Guru, the famous reformer and philosopher.
Vishnu Temple
This unique attraction draws attention of everyone visiting Varkala. The main reason behind the attraction is its year of establishment. It is believed that the temple is around 2000 years old. Associated with different legends and stories, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Standing on the sea shore, the temple witnesses the largest number of devotees during Arattu festival. This festival is celebrated in Meena month of the Malayalam calender, which lies between March and April.
