Kumarakom is a heavenly village which is located in the Kottyam district of? Kerala It consisting of three islands in Vembanad lake in the state. It has the largest backwater in Kerala which makes it a very popular tourist destination.

The backwaters of Kumarakom are a home to a rich variety of marine and freshwater fishes. Angling can be an exciting expedition here. You can enjoy the boat rides on Vembanad lake to satiate your adventurous side. Houseboats are a great option for exploring the backwaters, mangrove forests, green paddy fields and coconut palm trees. The traditional houseboat is called Kettuvalloms. For wildlife enthusiasts Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the best bet as it houses a wide variety of species of birds. Endangered Siberian Cranes can be seen here. Other bird species found here are egrets, darters, herons, teal, waterfowl and cuckoo.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary plays a host to the endangered Siberian Cranes who flock to its wooded land in the winters. Their faces and bills which are as red as blood, wing tips in jet black and tufts in blissful white make you wonder how beautifully nature has coloured these creatures. Its local avian population consists of water fowls, owls, cuckoos, egret, heron, parrot, teal, larks, flycatcher, darters, drongoes, wood beetle and several other birds. Keep a look out for the native King fisher displaying its vibrant colours. You really have to try hard to listen to the music of the birds here.

Kumarakom Backwater
Kerala is tantamount to backwaters. And you have not enjoyed your trip to Kerala to the hilt if you have not experienced the delight of the backwaters cruise in Kumarkom. It is one of the most celebrated backwaters destinations of the state and is located on the imposing Vembanand lake.
